We’ve been playing two different versions of “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” at work, and I’ve become more aware of just how seedy the lyrics and delivery can be. I always knew the lyrics were suspect, but I’d mostly heard sweet, classic versions from the ’40s and ’50s.

Every rendition of this song comes off a bit different. Sometimes it’s cute, and sometimes it sounds like she needs to get the hell out of that house. Or, in She & Him’s version, like he needs to be the one running away.

Usually I’m amused by the song– lately because I’m surprised it took me so long to really hone in on the rather predatory nature of the lyrics.
